Waster bust of HM Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother - 1981

Waster bust of HM Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother
Waster bust of HM Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother

Oscar Nemon designed this bust of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in the early 1980s and finished pieces were marketed in 1981. This item however is a waster, an object that has failed in the kiln, and is possibly a trial. There has been considerable distortion, causing the bust's neck to fail. The complete parian ware bust should feature Her Majesty the Queen Mother wearing a hat, insignia brooch and a three row necklace. The bust would stand on a separate two-tier square base.

Wedgwood's parian body was called 'Carrara', named after the marble. No precise date exists for when Wedgwood started producing parian wares, but it is unlikely to be before 1848.

HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother - Subject (1900 - 2002)

Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon was the Queen consort of King George VI of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions from 1936 until his death in 1952. She was the ninth of ten children of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, Claude George Bowes-Lyon (1855-1944) and his wife Lady Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck (1862–1938). She married Albert, second son of King George V, in 1923 and thus became Duchess of York. When Albert's brother King Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 to marry the American divorcée Wallis Simpson, Albert succeeded him on the throne as George VI and Elizabeth became his Queen consort crowned in 1937. After her husband's death she was called Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother to avoid confusion with her daughter then Queen Elizabeth II. She retired to Scotland but shortly afterwards she resumed her public duties and was forever, with much affection, always in the public eye until her death - aged 102 - in 2002.
