    Backstamp

A modern term applied to any mark placed on the underside of any ceramic object. This includes marks denoting factory, painter, decorator, etc. The term has come to refer to all marks, including those that have been incised, transfer printed, or hand painted. Strictly it should apply only to marks made with a rubber stamp.
