Trial for the Portland Vase - 1786
Jasper ‘trials’ or experiments were carried out to make a copy of the Barberini Vase from June 1786, when Josiah borrowed the original glass vase to make a copy in his Jasper body. The ‘trials’ were principally to emulate the dark blue cobalt tone of the glass and to create a translucent effect with the bas reliefs.
