Slipware Cradle - 1740
Cradle. Buff earthenware body with a cream coloured slip decoration to the rim 1740-50.
A miniature infant - cradle, originally made of slipware. Cradles were originally used for wedding-gifts as a fertility symbol, dated pieces from 1673 to 1839 being recorded. Later they were presented on the birth of the first child, and were modified by adding the figure of an infant covered with a blanket and sometimes an inscription recording the child’s name and birth-date. These were made from the end of the 18th Century in glazed earthenware, salt glazed ware delftware, and similar types of pottery.
