In a letter written by Josiah Wedgwood on 30th May 1779, he demonstrated his idea to have portraits of himself and Sarah painted by Stubbs, ‘At present I think we should give Mr. Stubbs every encouragement to proceed & establish the fashion. He wishes you know to do something for us by way setting off against the tablets. My picture, & Mrs. Wedgwoods in enamel will do something’.
