    Funerary urn and cover

Wedgwood white terracotta stoneware funerary urn decorated in imitation of porphyry.

This decorative funerary urn is made from white terracotta stoneware which has been decorated to create a porphyry effect. This has been done by the sponging of blue-green metallic oxides on its surface prior to firing. The handles or the urn are in the form of busts of winged angels and the knob is in the form of a flame - all of which have been gilded. The urn is further decorated with applied decoration. The urn was made between 1775-85.
