Dating Bone China

‘Wedgwood’ the original trade mark used from 1760 was registered in 1876.  This mark was used on all classes of ware without any addition until about 1878, when in the case of bone china, a printed mark, a sketchy Portland Vase above the word WEDGWOOD, was introduced.  This mark continued until 1890, when ETRURIA ENGLAND was added.

In 1892 the Portland Vase mark was dropped on all classes of ware except tiles.  Bone china made between 1892 and 1895 was simply marked WEDGWOOD with three asterisks and ETRURIA ENGLAND.

The Portland Vase mark was re-introduced about 1895 and consists of the Portland Vase above three asterisks, WEDGWOOD. One asterisk and ENGLAND.

Towards the end of the century the Portland Vase mark became smaller and more precise.

MADE IN ENGLAND was introduced in the early 20th century and variations of this mark have continued to the present day.
