Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820)

English naturalist, and friend of Josiah Wedgwood I. Banks accompanied Captain James Cook on his voyage to the southern hemisphere in 1768. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was its President from 1778 until his death in 1820. He was also a member of the Lunar Society. He was instrumental in sending to Josiah Wedgwood I clay sent from New South Wales (the infant colony of Sydney), in 1789. Wedgwood produced several portrait medallions of this renowned individual.
