John Northwood (1837-1902)
A glass worker who revived the art of 'carving' glass in the manner of the Roman cameo-carvers. He produced in cased glass a copy of the ancient, original Portland or Barberini vase. In 1877 Northwood was approached by the Wedgwood factory to finish the reliefs of a white on black Jasper limited edition of the Portland Vase, using the traditional glass makers method of lapidary polishing. All the copies of the Portland Vase polished by Northwood have the monogram 'JN' and the date 1877 incised at the root of the tree which appears almost immediately below one of the vase handles.
