The third generation

This chapter includes biographies of Josiah Wedgwood III, Francis Wedgwood, Charles Darwin, Emma Wedgwood and Hensleigh Wedgwood.

Josiah III and Francis were both partners in the company. Francis was an important social reformer who campaigned against chimney sweep climbing boys, and established both a school and a library at the Etruria factory.

Charles Darwin, the great naturalist, was the son of Susannah Wedgwood and Robert Waring Darwin (his two grandfathers were Josiah I and Erasmus Darwin). He married his cousin, Emma Wedgwood, the daughter of Josiah II.

Hensleigh, brother to Emma, Josiah III and Francis, was a renowned etymologist.
